This is one of the most baffling parts of publishing to me. Especially when it follows a large advance. I feel like I hear stories like this all time. The business model is to pay a bunch of money for a book and then just..forget about it? And then much later remember and be very confused and mad. At which point its obviously the authors fault. And we all have to pretend that authors have meaningful agency over this and that publishers really shouldn't be on the hook for like doing their job... Repeat. ..???

The conspiracy theorist in me wants to say things about propping up an entire industry with tax write-off projects to keep the big stars and cash cows alive, the way the majority of F1 car race teams work and show up for decades knowing they’ll never reach the top 5, yet money flows anyway. I’m rambling. And maybe jaded. 🥴 But also probably partially right. lol
